***CLEMSON***
Dabo Swinney is the head coach of Clemson's football team, which plays home games in Memorial Stadium (nicknamed “Death Valley,” just like LSU’s). The Clemson Tigers were the national champs for the 2016 and 2018 seasons thanks largely in part to the quarterbacks:
Deshaun Watson - Drafted 12th overall by Houston in 2017, he tore his ACL during his rookie season. He led the Texans to the division title in 2018 and 2019, and led the NFL in passing yards in 2020. Watson was sued by numerous massage therapists for sexual assault in 2021 and missed the entire season. He was traded to the Browns in 2022 and signed a fully guaranteed 5-year $230 million contract. Watson only played 6 games during the 2023 season, mostly due to a shoulder injury
Trevor Lawrence - As a true freshman, he led Clemson to the national title, after which his team was served fast food by Donald Trump at the White House (due to a government shutdown). He was drafted 1st overall by Jacksonville in 2021 and led the Jaguars to a playoff victory in 2022 and a winning record in 2023. He is known for having relatively long hair (pictured below)
DAILY DOUBLE #2
FOLLOW THE WORLD LEADER
She followed Gulzarilal Nanda in 1966 & Charan Singh in 1980
**INDIRA GANDHI***
Indira Gandhi was India's first (and only so far) female Prime Minister, serving from 1966-1977 and again from 1980-1984. She was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as India’s first PM from 1947–1964. She was a member of the Indian National Congress, also known as the Congress Party. Her time in office included the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which essentially ended with East Pakistan becoming independent as Bangladesh. A period known as The Emergency occurred when she declared a state of emergency after a court ruled she had to stay out of politics for six years due to violating election laws. That 21-month period included the forced sterilization of millions of people.
Indira Gandhi’s second stint in office was ended prematurely when she assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards (Satwant and Beant Singh) in retaliation for military action (Operation Blue Star) that she ordered on Amritsar’s Golden Temple (a gurdwara, or place of worship for Sikhs). She was on her way to an interview with British actor Peter Ustinov (Hercule Poirot in 1978's Death on the Nile) when she was shot. She was succeeded by her son Rajiv, who served as PM from 1984-1989. Anti-Sikh riots followed her assassination, resulting in Rajiv saying "when a big tree falls, the Earth shakes." India’s capital, New Delhi, is served by an airport (DEL) named for her. India's longest canal, which starts in Punjab and ends in Rajasthan (which contains the Thar Desert), is also named for her.
DAILY DOUBLE #3
A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION
Part of biliary surgery, the operation to remove this, now one of the most common, was first done by Dr. Langenbuch in 1882
***GALLBLADDER***
The gallbladder is a pear-shaped abdominal organ. It stores a yellow-green fluid called bile, which aids in the digestion of fats. Bile is produced by the liver (about two pints a day) and then transported to the gallbladder, where it gets concentrated. The gallbladder can hold about 1.7 ounces of bile at a time. The bile is then discharged into the small intestine, specifically, its first region, the duodenum. The release of bile from the gallbladder is caused by the hormone CCK, or cholecystokinin [KOL-eh-SIS-toh-KY-nin]. The flow of bile into the small intestine is regulated by a valve called the sphincter of Oddi [OH-dee] (named for Italian anatomist Ruggero Oddi). When the small intestine is empty, the sphincter of Oddi is closed.
Too much cholesterol can cause a condition known as strawberry gallbladder. The removal of the gallbladder is called a cholecystectomy. The gallbladder can be removed via a minimally invasive surgical technique called laparoscopy, which uses small incisions. In the Bible, the angel Raphael tells Tobias to use fish’s "gall" (meaning the contents of its gallbladder AKA bile) to cure his father Tobit, who went blind after a bird defecated in his eyes.
