***PROMETHEUS***
Mary Shelley wrote the 1818 epistolary horror novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Its subtitle mentions a figure from Greek myth who made mortals out of clay and stole fire from the gods. The novel's title scientist, Victor, brings to life an 8-foot-tall human-like creature, but reneges on his promise to make him a female companion and abandons it. The creature torments Victor and kills his loved ones, including his brother William, best friend Henry Clerval, and adopted sister / wife Elizabeth on their wedding night. Victor manages to track the creature to near the North Pole and tells an explorer named Robert Walton his story before dying of an illness.
The first Frankenstein movie was released in 1910 and was produced by Thomas Edison. Boris Karloff played Frankenstein's monster in a 1931 movie, which is remembered for the line "It's alive! It's alive!” That movie was directed by James Whale, who also directed 1933’s The Invisible Man and the 1935 sequel Bride of Frankenstein (whose title character was played Valerie Hobson, the future wife of British politician John Profumo).
The Curse of Frankenstein was a 1957 movie in which the monster was played by Christopher Lee, a step-cousin of Ian Fleming who wore fangs when playing the title character of the 1958 movie Dracula and later played Count Dooku in the Star Wars prequel movies. The rock band The Edgar Winter Group had a #1 hit in 1973 with the song "Frankenstein," whose title was inspired by the way the track was spliced together from various sections of the original recording. Guillermo del Toro's movie Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is expected to come out in November 2025.

DAILY DOUBLE #2
MOVIES AFTER YOU PRESS PLAY

***RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK***
George Lucas co-created the character Henry "Indiana" Jones, who is an archaeologist played by Harrison Ford. The character has starred in five movies, all of which have featured music by John Williams. The first four movies were directed by Steven Spielberg. The first movie was Raiders of the Lost Ark, which begins with Indy in a Peruvian temple narrowly escaping a gigantic rolling boulder while attempting to recover a golden idol. The movie is set in 1936 and mainly focuses on Indy’s attempt to recover the Ark of the Covenant in Egypt before the Nazis can. Despite Indy’s best efforts, the Nazis acquire the title chest, but their faces melt and heads blow up after they open it. The movie co-stars Karen Allen as Indy’s former lover, Marion Ravenwood, who runs a bar in Nepal.
The prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which came out in 1984, was the second movie in the series. The title character is asked by villagers in British India to rescue their children from a Thuggee cult that practices human sacrifice to honor the goddess Kali. The movie co-starred Kate Capshaw as Indy's love interest Willie Scott and Ke Huy Quan as Indy's sidekick Short Round. The MPAA introduced a new PG-13 rating two months after the release of the film, which was rated PG despite containing many violent scenes, including one in which Amrish Puri’s character Mola Ram rips out a heart.
The third installment in the series was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which came out in 1989. The movie centers on Indy attempting to find his father (played by Sean Connery), who was kidnapped by Nazis while searching for the Holy Grail. The movie opens with a prologue in which a young version of Indy is played by River Phoenix. The fourth movie in the series was 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, in which Indy’s son is played by Shia LaBeouf, and Indy survives an atomic bomb test by hiding in a fridge. The fifth and final movie in the series was 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

***ULAANBAATAR***
Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia, which was formerly the center of the powerful Mongol empire (ruled by Genghis Khan from 1206-1227). Ulaanbaatar’s population is about one-half that of Mongolia, which is the least densely populated country in the world. The Tuul River flows through the city, which has a name meaning “Red Hero.” The city contains a statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, who was a leader of the communist Mongolian Revolution of 1921 (during which the country gained independence from China). The city is surrounded by Töv, one of Mongolia's 21 provinces (or aimags). The city contains the National Sports Stadium, which is home to the annual Naadam festival (focuses on three games: horseracing, wrestling and archery). The city is the coldest capital in the world (average year-round temperature is 27 degrees Fahrenheit).
