Thank you for reading another issue of the Jeopardy Answer & Question Recap, or JAQR [“jacker”] for short. This recap includes at least one clue from each Jeopardy! episode between Monday 3/17 and Friday 3/21. The recap includes Daily Doubles, Final Jeopardy clues, and a Triple Stumper. There’s also questions about material from last week and Bonus Clues about long ago covered topics. The first half of the recap includes just the clues so you can quiz yourself if you want. The second half gives you some (hopefully) interesting information about the clues and/or some related info.

DAILY DOUBLE #1

"BAD" ENTERTAINMENT

In a 2015 No. 1 hit, "'Cause baby now we've got" this, "You know it used to be mad love"

***BAD BLOOD***

For more about the early days of Taylor Swift (up to mid-2008), check out Daily Double #2 from this past recap: https://jaqr.substack.com/p/jaqr-march-9-2025

Taylor Swift released her second studio album, Fearless, in 2008. Its lead single was “Love Story,” which was loosely based on Romeo and Juliet, but features a happy ending. The album's most popular song was "You Belong with Me," which is about unrequited love and was co-written with her frequent collaborator, Liz Rose. In the music video, Swift played two characters: the antagonistic cheer captain who wears short skirts and high heels, and the clarinet-playing band geek who is in the bleachers and wears T-shirts and sneakers. Kanye West notably interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV VMAs, where she won Best Female Video over Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” Swift’s third studio album was 2010’s Speak Now, whose first two singles were the top-ten hits “Mine” and the ballad “Back to December.”

Swift’s fourth album, released in 2012, was titled Red, and has been called a breakup album. It included her first #1 hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and another popular song titled "I Knew You Were Trouble." Swift’s fifth studio album was released in 2014 and titled 1989 in honor of her birth year. The album, which she called her first "official pop album," included three #1 hits: “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” and “Bad Blood,” all of which were co-written and produced by the Swedish dudes Max Martin and Shellback. The music video to “Shake It Off” features the finger-tutting of John Hunt aka P-Nut. The music video for "Blank Space" was filmed at Oheka Castle (named for Otto Hermann Kahn), which is the third largest home in the U.S. The song “Bad Blood” was believed by many to be about Katy Perry.

Swift co-starred in the 2010 movie Valentine's Day, voiced a character in the 2012 movie The Lorax, and played the title character's daughter Rosemary in the 2014 movie The Giver. In 2008, she briefly dated Joe Jonas. In 2009, she dated her V-Day co-star Taylor Lautner, who was the subject of her song “Back to December.” Swift dated John Mayer and Jake Gyllenhaal in 2010 and Harry Styles in 2012.

DAILY DOUBLE #2

AROUND THE WORLD

Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Fort Jesus was established to protect this Kenyan port city

***MOMBASA***

Located along the Indian Ocean, Mombasa is the main port city of Kenya. The city is on the Swahili Coast, which stretches from Kenya to Mozambique. The city is home to Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in the 1590s and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city has been controlled by many others over the years, including the Sultanate of Oman (1698–1824), the Sultanate of Zanzibar (1826–1887), and the British (1887-1963).

The Uganda Railway, whose construction began in 1895, links Mombasa to Nairobi and Uganda. During its construction, many workers were killed by the Tsavo man-eating lions (now on display at the Field Museum in Chicago). A variety of factors (especially the cost) led it to be called the “Lunatic Express.” It is mostly parallel to the Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, which opened in 2017. It cost $3.6 billion and was a project of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Mombasa is also home to Moi International Airport (MBA). It is named for Daniel arap Moi, who served as Kenya's second president from 1978-2002. Other ways to travel include Trans-African Highway 8, which is about 4,000 miles long and connects the city to Lagos.

Other cities in Kenya to know include:

  • Nairobi - the capital and most populous city

  • Nakuru - shares its name with a lake home to millions of flamingos

  • Kisumu - located on Lake Victoria

  • Kikuyu - shares its name with Kenya's largest ethnic group

  • Ngong - shares its name with the hills where Karen Blixen had a coffee plantation, as described in the memoir Out of Africa (published under the pen name Isak Dinesen)

Mombasa - History, Map, Location, Getting Here, & More
The Mombasa Tusks are located along Moi Avenue in Mombasa and were built to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's visit in 1952.
