Thank you for reading another issue of the Jeopardy Answer & Question Recap, or JAQR [“jacker”] for short. This recap includes two clues from each Jeopardy! episode between Monday 11/18 and Friday 11/22. The recap includes Triple Stumpers, Daily Doubles, and Final Jeopardy clues. The first half of the recap includes just the clues so you can quiz yourself if you want. The second half gives you some (hopefully) interesting information about the clues and/or some related info.

TRIPLE STUMPER #1

SIMOLEANS, MOOLAH, SCRATCH, MONEY

The name of this former currency of Portugal came from scutum, Latin for "shield"

***ESCUDO***

Historical currencies of the European Union include the drachma (Greece), franc (Belgium, France, and Luxembourg), guilder (The Netherlands), lira (Italy and Malta), mark (Germany), peseta (Spain), pound (Cyprus and Ireland), and schilling (Austria).

Some countries used currencies that are a bit less well-known, such as:

  • Croatia = kuna (plural = kune) - named for a weasel-like animal called the marten whose fur was once widely traded

  • Finland = markka (plural = markkaa) - Alvar Aalto was depicted on the front of the 50 markka banknote

  • Latvia = lats (plural = lati) - not to be confused with the pair of large back muscles called the lats (also known as latissimus dorsi)

  • Lithuania = litas (plural = litai) - Vincas Kudirka, who wrote Lithuania’s national anthem (“Tautiška giesmė”), was depicted on the front of the 500 litas banknote

  • Slovakia = koruna - derived from a word for “crown,” it’s also the name of the currency still used in the Czech Republic

  • Slovenia = tolar (plural = tolarjev) - Jože Plečnik, the architect who designed the Triple Bridge in Ljubljana and Prague Castle in the not-too-far-away Czech Republic, appears on the 500 tolarjev banknote

The architect Alvar Aalto designed MIT’s Baker House (dorm) and Helsinki’s Finlandia Hall

TRIPLE STUMPER #2

R&B & SOUL

A '90s collective including Questlove & D'Angelo was called this, a portmanteau of soul & a word pertaining to a zodiac sign

***SOULQUARIANS***

Founding members of the Soulquarians, who all have the same astrological sign (Aquarius), include:

  • D'Angelo (Michael Eugene Archer) - known for the songs "Brown Sugar" (title track on a 1995 album that also includes "Lady") and "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" (from the 2000 album Voodoo and remembered for its music video in which D’Angelo appears nude)

  • James Poyser - keyboardist and session musician who has co-written many songs with the likes of Mariah Carey, John Legend, and Rihanna; he may be best known for trying not to laugh during the weekly “Thank You Notes” segment on The Tonight Show

  • Questlove (Ahmir K. Thompson) - the drummer for The Roots, he won an Oscar for the 2021 documentary Summer of Soul (about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival aka “Black Woodstock”)

For more about another member of the collective, Erykah Badu, check out Triple Stumper #6 from this past recap: https://jaqr.substack.com/p/jaqr-august-11-2024

TRIPLE STUMPER #3

LITERARY LOS ANGELES

Laurel Canyon, the Sunset Strip & the Whisky are among the locales mentioned in this rockin' 2019 bestseller by Taylor Jenkins Reid

***DAISY JONES & THE SIX***

The book Daisy Jones & the Six, which centers on a very successful 1970s rock band that eventually breaks up, was loosely based on Fleetwood Mac. The title singer was based on Stevie Nicks, while the the other main character, Billy Dunne, was based on Lindsey Buckingham. The novel was written as an oral history, and was adapted into a 2023 miniseries on Amazon Prime Video starring Riley Keough and Sam Claflin.

Daisy Jones & the Six is part of Reid’s “famous women quartet,” which also includes:

  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017) - the title Hollywood icon (loosely based on Elizabeth Taylor) selects an unknown journalist named Monique Grant to write her biography

  • Malibu Rising (2021) - centers on the surfer/model Nina Riva, who throws a much anticipated annual end-of-summer party, which is attended by her siblings Jay, Hud, and Kit

  • Carrie Soto Is Back (2022) - the title tennis player comes out of retirement to regain the record for most Grand Slam titles
