JAQR - The Bible (Special Edition)
Biblical Beasts, Biblical Quotes, Biblical Threesomes, Biblical Women, and more...
Thank you for reading another issue of the Jeopardy Answer & Question Recap, or JAQR [“jacker”] for short. This special edition recap focuses on the Bible. The first half of the recap will include clues from previously Jeopardy! episodes so you can quiz yourself if you want. The second half will give you some (hopefully) interesting information about the clues and/or some related info.
This recap is the third overall that focuses on a specific topic. The first two were:
Old TV Shows = https://jaqr.substack.com/p/jaqr-old-tv-shows-special-edition
Potent Potables = https://jaqr.substack.com/p/jaqr-potent-potables-special-edition
P.S. Next week’s issue is a new type of special edition that I am tentatively calling “Big Money Recap.”

***JOB*** [johb]
“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil” is the first verse of the first chapter of the Book of Job. Satan tells God that if Job was punished and tormented, then the upright Job would turn away from God. Satan is granted the chance to test Job, whose livestock, servants, and children all die. After shaving his head, Job declares “Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away” at the end of the first chapter.
Job then has lengthy conversations about his afflictions with his friends Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, who all believe that misfortune only follows from evil deeds. The interactions purport to show the folly of trying to understand the nature of God and His ways with limited human knowledge. God eventually speaks to Job from a whirlwind in Chapter 38 and tells him to “gird up now thy loins like a man.” God asks many rhetorical questions, such as “Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? Declare if thou knowest it all.” In the end, Job acknowledges the unlimited power of God, who restores his riches and family.

***METHUSELAH***
Enoch was the seventh patriarch, which refers to a father of the human race (and begins with Adam, Seth, Enos, Kenan, Mahalalel, and Jared). Enoch was the son of Jared (who lived 962 years) and father of Methuselah (who lived 969 years). Although Enoch “only” lived 365 yeas, he “walked with God: and he was not; for God took him,” which some people believe means he entered Heaven alive. He is the namesake of the apocryphal three Books of Enoch. The first book is preserved in the Geʽez language, which is native to Eritrea and Ethiopia. It contains a section called The Book of the Watchers, which is named for some angels led by Samyaza who were sent to Earth to watch over humans, but instead procreated among them, resulting in savage giants called Nephilim. There is a different Enoch in the Bible who is the son of Cain. Other notable figures with that name include Enoch Arden (title character of a Lord Tennyson poem), Enoch Bartlett (pear namesake) and British politician Enoch Powell (gave the anti-immigrant “Rivers of Blood” speech).

BIBLICAL BEASTS

***FOUR***
The two talking animals from the Old Testament are the serpent from the Garden of Eden (zero legs) and Balaam’s ass (four legs). The serpent appears in the Book of Genesis, while Balaam’s ass is from the Book of Numbers. Balaam [BAY-lum] was a prophet and diviner/seer from Pethor who was persistently urged by the King of Moab (named Balak) to curse Israel, whose people were at one point camped on the plains of Moab during their forty years of wandering. God sends an angel to Balaam that is at first only seen by Balaam's donkey. The angel has a sword drawn in his hand, so the donkey turns to get out of the way. Balaam then strikes his faithful donkey three times with a staff. The angel then gives the donkey the power to speak. The donkey states “What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?” Balaam's eyes are then opened by the angel, who commands him to bless Israel and its people. The prayer Ma Tovu, which is recited by Jews when entering a synagogue, begins with a line said by Balaam: "How lovely are your tents, O Jacob; your encampments, O Israel!
